Jacob Lawrence's Genesis Series

Painter Jacob Lawrence is known for using a series format to render in colorful expressive imagery and text the narrative stories of historical African American figures like Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman. Each of the eight works on view in Jacob Lawrence's Genesis Series (1990) describes a passage from the book of Genesis in the King James version of the Bible.

The painting Portrait of a Wealthy African was a star of the recent groundbreaking exhibition Revealing the African Presence in Renaissance Europe. This portrait, on loan from a private collection, shows an unknown sitter of high status. Please join Dr. Joaneath Spicer, curator of Renaissance and Baroque Art, as she takes you into the galleries for an intimate conversation about this pivotal portrait in the context of the Walters’ permanent collection.

The first concert of the Fall Peabody on the Court Music Series will will present A Concert of World Premieres, inspired by period and modern instruments. Graduate student composers John Henderson, Charles Rudig, James Chu, Pan Zhujun, Scott Miller, and Wynne Fung will have their works performed by Lisa Perry, soprano; Aik Shin Tan, recorders; Michelle Skinner, Mark Ericksen, violins; Jeremy Lyons, guitar; and Niccolo Seligmann, viola da gamba.

The Christmas Story in Art Walk-In Tour
