The Walters recently received a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services to perform the cleaning and treatment of several objects from the Doris Duke Collection of Southeast Asian Art. This collection, comprised of a variety of beautiful and unique pieces, has been in storage for some time, and many pieces require treatment. Visitors can interact with conservators as they work on this collection in the Special Exhibition Gallery.

This winter the Walters presents a new view of the Italian Renaissance. See the work of one of the most original and innovative painters in fifteenth-century Italy, Carlo Crivelli of Venice. This intimate exhibition showcases his luminous paintings, with their lavish use of gold, suggesting the materiality of goldsmiths’ work and luxury textiles.

New this winter is an exquisite exhibition that explores the story of Madame de Pompadour, the influential mistress of King Louis XV of France, best remembered as an enthusiastic patron of the arts. Less well known are the works of art she made and collected. On view here for the first time are selections from the Suite of Prints, an extremely rare first-edition set of etchings created by the royal mistress in the 1750s and purchased by Museum founder Henry Walters from a Parisian book dealer in 1895.

Many of the fascinating connections between the East and the West in the medieval era can be witnessed through Islamic objects that were modified to fit more comfortably into Christian contexts. Dr. Avinoam Shalem of Columbia University will discuss the radical reinterpretations of Islamic objects—such as ivory caskets and rock crystal vessels—that occurred once they were taken to the church treasuries of Western medieval societies.
