Visitor Services Desk Volunteers
Visitor Services Desk Volunteers are an essential element of the museum's frontline for creating a friendly and comfortable environment for visitors to experience our art. They warmly welcome visitors and answer questions at the Information Desk and over the telephone. They distribute floor plans and audio tour guides; they recommend things to see and do within the museum; they answer questions about the day’s events, the collection, museum facilities, area restaurants, transportation, and Baltimore attractions.
Requirements
- Excellent communication skills, both in person and over the phone
- Warm, outgoing and professional public presence
- Superior customer service skills and a desire to make each visitor’s experience memorable
- Able to stand for extended periods and occasionally lift up to 10 pounds
- Skilled in using computers to find information quickly and to use the Internet and email for communication and study
- Knowledge of history, art history, or visual arts are desirable
- Knowledge of Baltimore area attractions and amenities are desirable
- Bilingual skills desirable
- At least a high school graduate
- May be required to pass a criminal background check
Training and Commitment
After successful completion of an orientation and training program, volunteers commit to working a bi-weekly 3 1/2 hour shift for at least one year. Volunteers will pick a regular day to work (Wednesday through Sunday) with shift hours from 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m. or 1:30-5 p.m.
Special Note:
Current needs are for 2-3 volunteers on Wednesday afternoon, 1-2 for Thursday afternoon and 8 for Saturday and Sunday shifts. Applicants must be able to begin the training program in mid-August and able to work during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday periods.

Box Office Assistant
Box Office Assistants are assigned to the admissions desk where they perform a variety of services for member members and general visitors.
They greet and check in visitors and members, issue exhibition tickets and entrance stickers, collect and record demographic information about visitors, validate parking, answer questions about the museum, provide floor plans and exhibition guides, give directions to museum exhibitions, restrooms, sell event tickets, and perform data entry . They offer and explain member benefits, sell new and renew memberships, and answer a variety of questions about the museum.
Requirements
Training and Commitment
Box Office Assistants must commit to serve at least 1 year. Volunteers will be assigned a day of the week to work (Wednesday through Sunday) and they will work a full day (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.) every other week. Training will be provided.
Special Note:
Current needs are for 1 volunteer on Wednesday, 2 for Thursday, 1 for Friday, and 1 for Saturday shifts. Applicants must be able to begin the training program in mid-August and plan to be here during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday periods.

School Tour Facilitator
School tours take place during the school year on Wednesday through Friday at 10 AM, 11 AM, 12PM and 1 PM. School Tour Facilitators meet school tours groups at the Charles Street entrance on the hour as students arrive for their tours. The tour facilitator tells students where to store belongings, maintains order and safety as students enter and depart, organizes them into groups to meet their docents, coordinates departing and arriving groups, and performs similar organizing activities.. Between tours the tour facilitator welcomes visitors and provides directions to the box office and galleries.
Requirements
- Enjoys working with large groups of students and teachers
- Able to organize and take charge of groups
- Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
- Flexibility and good problem solving skills
- Able to stand for 30-40 minutes at a time
- Comfortable enforcing policies to guarantee student safety in a heavily trafficked space
Training and Commitment
School Tour Facilitators serve from September through May. Volunteers commit to work at least bi-weekly from 9:45-2:10 on an established day (a Wednesday, Thursday or Friday). Training will be provided.

Currently recruiting for the 2010-2011 school year. Six volunteers needed.

Coat Room Manager
Volunteers serving in this critical position help create the visitor’s initial and final impression of the Walters Art museum. The coat room is staffed on Family Festival Days, special occasions, such as the Jewelry Fair, and busy weekends from October through April. Coat Room Managers are responsible for the efficient operation of the coat room and for safeguarding the property of visitors. They warmly greet visitors, check their coats and oversized bags, and quickly find them when the visitors are ready to leave. They may also be asked to serve as greerers or do such things as crowd control.
Requirements
- Good organizational skills and able to work efficiently
- Able to stand for extended periods
- A desire to make each visitor’s experience memorable
- Very good social and communication skills, including tact and courtesy
- Must be at least 16 and have dependable transportation
- Must sign up for at least 6 dates or a regular schedule between October and April
- Bilingual skills a plus
Training and Commitment
Shifts are from 9:45-5:00 and primarily occur on weekends, school breaks, and a few holidays. Volunteers sign up to work at least 5 occasions between October and April and serve as an on-call pool to help on additional dates. Coat Room Managers, along with Tour Facilitators and Family Festival volunteers, form the recruitment pool from which most vacancies at the Visitor Services Desks are filled. Training will be provided.

Recruitment begins September 15th.

Special Event Host
Volunteers are on-call for exhibition openings, after hour events, or other special events to greet museum guests, distribute programs, check coats, crowd management, or provide directions. Most events occur at night and/or weekends.

Orientation Host
Orientation hosts stroll the lobby areas and galleries where they provide directions, answer questions on museum facilities, hand out floor plans, show visitors how to use gallery resources, alert security officers to problems, suggest visit routes, and maintain supplies. Orientation hosts may assist visitors in checking coats and bags.

- At least 16 years old
Training and Commitment
After successful completion of training, volunteers must commit to working two regularly scheduled three-hour shifts per month for at least three months.
