This Make Night begins with a discussion of Asian art from the Walters’ collection, followed by a kundalini yoga workshop for all skill levels in the serene Renaissance Sculpture Court. Simple breathing techniques paired with physical motions will strengthen your body; the art will open your mind.

This introductory drawing workshop will examine works in the Walters’ collection that use dramatic light and shadow to carve portraits out of darkness. Participants will create charcoal drawings by studying figurative sculptures and a live model on the Sculpture Court.

Make Night: Inscribing the Self, Islamic Paper Marbling

The first installment of this three-part workshop series explores traditional paper marbling techniques and block printing of geometric patterns. Learn to float paints on water, manipulate the patterns, and transfer the designs to paper. Then, hand-cut patterns into a printing block and use the marbled paper to pull prints.

The second installment of this three-part workshop series explores the history of the written word and its relationship to art, from the eras of the Persian Empire through modern practice. Learn about Persian calligraphy and practice the basics of writing the Persian alphabet in the Nasta‘liq calligraphic style. Participants are encouraged to use their marbled paper from the first workshop.
