Musician and producer Wendel Patrick will use turntables, electronics, and keyboards to explore lineage, power, conquest, and their relationship to ancient Greek and Roman religion. Intermedia artists Mark Brown and Carrie Fucile will use common, modern materials—including piles of bricks and desk fans—as the instruments that help audiences experience the Dutch Age of Exploration in the 1600s.

Make Night: Bookbinding and Upcycling

Join the curators of Ink Press Productions for a bookmaking workshop where participants will create and bind their own unique books from a mixture of found, scrap, and recycled materials. This workshop will explore the ways material and content form a conversation about the conceptual potential in handmade books.

Amy Reid will use her music to explore the processes of destruction and preservation in the Museum’s galleries of Ancient Near Eastern art. Performer TRNSGNDR/VHS will examine the culture and aesthetics of seventeenth-century European art through an immersive, multi-sensory installation in the Baroque galleries.

Make Night: Plastic Bag Crafts

What should you do with that growing pile of plastic bags slowly taking over your kitchen? Guest artist Thea Canlas will show you some easy techniques to turn the plastic bag, a seemingly universal and endless resource, into a useful DIY object. In this workshop, participants will learn how to make “plarn,” or plastic yarn, which can be used for knitting, crocheting, and sewing.

Electronic artist Bonnie Jones will use the themes of migration, mobility, and impermanence to highlight the Renaissance and Medieval collections. Jazz pianist Lafayette Gilchrist will use his compositions to examine the components of great civilizations in the Egyptian galleries.
