19th-Century Dutch born artist, Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema found a ready market in London among the wealthy middle classes for his paintings re-creating scenes of domestic life in imperial Roman times. His work, Sappho and Alcaeus, turns to Greece to illustrate an ancient passage. Members are invited to learn more in this intimate tour led by Jo Briggs, Assistant Curator of 18th- and 19th- Century Art, and Talia Hughes, Senior at Johns Hopkins University and former Hall Fellow.
