Black History Month Lecture Series: Hidden in Plain Sight: The Landscapes of Robert Seldon Duncanson

Join Deputy Director for Audience Engagement Jacqueline Copeland as she explores the paintings of nineteenth-century African American artist Robert Seldon Duncanson, hailed in 1861 as the “best landscape painter in the West.” One of several artists who depicted the Ohio River Valley, Duncanson seldom addressed political and social issues affecting African Americans in his works. New scholarship, however, has suggested that his works contained subtle messages that were relevant to the African American community.
