Heidi Ardizzone’s biography An Illuminated Life: Belle da Costa Greene’s Journey from Prejudice to Privilege tells the fascinating story of the secret life of the young librarian hired by J.P. Morgan to organize his rare book and manuscript collection in 1905. Greene became director of the Morgan Library and a celebrity in New York and the art world. Born to a family of free people of color, Greene changed her name, invented a Portuguese ancestry, and moved with ease in New York’s elite social circles. In 1932 she was among a select group of art historians and museum professionals retained by the Walters’ Trustees to review and catalog the collection before the new museum could open to the public.

This Gilded Age Talk celebrates the new installation From Rye to Raphael: The Walters Story. It is the annual Ted Low lecture, in honor of Theodore Lewis Low, who was Director of Education at the then Walters Art Gallery for 34 years,
