Gee

Organized by the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, this exhibition features approximately 40 brilliant and dynamic quilts made by 39 African American women living in the remote community of Gee's Bend, Alabama.  The exhibition explores the impact of architecture, environment, and traditional quilting motifs, and examines the structural patterns that appear to form the foundation of Gee's Bend quilt making.  The quilts, whose patterns have been handed down through generations, display bold colors and an improvisational style that is reminiscent of 20th-century minimalist art.  A fully illustrated catalogue accompanies the exhibition.
