Sacred Ground: New York City's African Burial Ground

Date
Saturday, February 19, 2011
Time
02:00 PM–03:00 PM

When Manhattan's African Burial Ground was first discovered, few people thought it necessary to preserve an 18th century cemetery. However, its close proximity to Ground Zero has encouraged people to recognize it as sacred ground - and being a place worthy of recognition and veneration centuries after it was used.

This lecture is presented by Karen Juanita Carrillo, a New York-based writer and photographer, focusing primarily on African American and Afro-Latino issues. She operates the website Afropresencia.com.  In 2002, she was awarded the National Newspapers Publishers Association's "Perspective Reporting Award” for human-interest coverage of the impact of September 11th, highlighting diverse perspectives in African American communities.
