Lunch and Learn: The Black Egyptian at Christ's Hand

Date
Thursday, December 6, 2012
Time
12:00 PM–01:00 PM

The Supper at Emmaus (Venetian, ca. 1540) is a little known painting in the Walter’s collection which is currently on display as part of Revealing the African Presence in Renaissance Europe. Bring a light lunch to enjoy while exhibition curator, Dr. Joaneath Spicer, James A. Murnaghan Curator of Renaissance and Baroque Art, examines the black Egyptian at Christ’s right hand. What does the apparently unprecedented inclusion of a black Egyptian soldier at Christ’s right hand tell us about contemporary society, the Biblical story, and finally the development of Venetian painting?
