Lunch and Learn: The Bacchic St. John the Baptist

The Renaissance desire to find a single, universal truth in human history and religion sometimes led humanists to a Christian interpretation for pagan divinities and their stories. A number of Images of St. John the Baptist reveal this syncretism by the year 1500, when they show the Christian figure with attributes of the classical god Bacchus.  The Walters is home to two such paintings.  Bring your light lunch and listen as retired National Gallery of Art Senior Lecturer Russ Sale delves into the fascinating history of the Bacchic St. John the Baptist.
