On-site Insights: Developing an Exhibition

This event is free.
Registration is required.

In this Onsite Insights program, the Walters' exhibition team will share stories of the development of the exhibition, New Eyes on America: The Genius of Richard Caton Woodville. This is the first exhibition on this short-lived and influential Baltimore-born genre painter since 1967. The Walters Art Museum develops special exhibitions through a team process, beginning with a curatorial vision that springs from the permanent collection and a local context, and culminating in the crafted experience within the exhibition galleries. Program participants will hear about the process of finding curriculum connections and determining the learning outcomes in consultation with our Teacher Advisory Committee, and about how the Advisory Committee of scholars across disciplines brought new eyes to the works of art and new knowledge to their context. They will hear about the detective work of bringing together an artist’s known oeuvre and the process of integrating findings of a comprehensive conservation technical research study into the exhibition.  They will see how the exhibition design drew inspiration from the 1850’s parlor of the Walters family home and other historical and contemporary sources.  They will experience how the team used research to find “hot button” connections and themes of contemporary relevance to engage audiences in works of art from the 1840s.

This Onsite Insight will be held during our Thursday evening hours, and includes free admission to the special exhibition. For this event, we extend a special welcome to our visitors from the 2013 Annual Meeting and Museum Expo hosted by the American Alliance of Museums.
