Embark on our second voyage of Egyptian art and life as we navigate the Faiyum oasis, just west of the Nile River. Looking closely at reliefs and ritual objects of this incredible ancient civilization, we’ll celebrate the crocodile god Sobek, and his significance within this mysterious culture. Travel south to our thriving studio to create puzzling messages of your own! 

Recommended for ages 6-8. One guardian per two children required.

Graduated from our pre-k program?  Join the big kids and their adults for our popular Walk, Wonder, and Create family tours! For ages 6 and up, this once-a-month 45-minute experience allows families to enjoy an interactive tour of the Walters’ collection, and then create artwork that relates to the theme of the tour.

Please note: Online pre-registration required. Fall 2013 (August-January) Program registration will be available in July: July 1 - Member registration begins; July 8 - Public registration begins. Museum members can register early for this popular series!

Collateral Damage: The Fate of Cultural Property during Armed Conflict

The 2003 looting of the Iraq National Museum shocked the world. But despite new efforts to save world treasures, the loss of cultural property during armed conflicts is on the rise. Corine Wegener, Smithsonian Cultural Heritage Preservation Officer, will talk about her work as a U.S. Army “Monuments Man” in Iraq. Terry Drayman-Weisser, the Walters’ Director of Conservation and Technical Research, will describe damage to Iraq’s ancient Nimrud ivories and continuing efforts to preserve Iraq’s cultural heritage. Young artists are invited to strengthen their observational drawing skills and build their portfolios while exploring works of art in the Walters’ collection.
