Walk-In Tour: Jacob Lawrence's Genesis Series

FREE
No registration required.
Meet in Centre Street lobby

This free, walk-in tour examines Jacob Lawrence’s Genesis Series (1990), which reflects the African American artist’s youthful memories of passionate sermons about the Creation given by ministers at the Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem, where Lawrence was baptized in 1932. Lawrence is known for using the series format to render the stories of historical African American figures like Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman in colorful, expressive imagery . Each of the eight works on view in the Genesis Series describes a passage from the book of Genesis in the King James Bible. The series, lent from Eddie C. and C. Sylvia Brown’s Baltimore collection, features the same unity and visual eloquence of Lawrence’s earlier series and has a powerful, expressive impact.

This is part of our weekly series of free, docent-led tours.
