Walk-In Tour: Designed for Flowers: Contemporary Japanese Ceramics

Free with exhibition ticket
No registration required

Take the opportunity to tour our spring exhibition with its curator, for only the price of an exhibition ticket (free for members)! A private collection of contemporary Japanese ceramics serves as the introduction to the Japanese art of flower arranging, called “ikebana.”  Developing gradually over several centuries, ikebana has inspired the creation of extraordinary ceramic containers. This exhibition outlines the history of some of Japan's major schools of ikebana and displays a wide variety of contemporary ceramics created in harmony with the most modern floral conventions. Inspired by the philosophies, literature and aesthetics at the heart of ikebana, the vessels displayed in this show showcase a stunning diversity of styles, unified by their engagement with Japan’s long tradition of ceramic art. If you are not a Walters member, please purchase a ticket at the box office before meeting Dr. Mintz in the Centre Street lobby for this installment of our Sunday walk-in tours.
