Thursday Evening Gallery Talk: Designed for Flowers: Contemporary Japanese Ceramics

Date
Thursday, March 6, 2014
Time
06:00 PM–07:00 PM
Thursday Evening Gallery Talk: Designed for Flowers: Contemporary Japanese Ceramics

Tour the special exhibition Designed for Flowers: Contemporary Japanese Ceramics with chief curator and Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Quincy Scott Curator of Asian Art, Dr. Robert Mintz.  The tour will begin with a brief explanation of the history and nature of Japanese traditions of flower arranging, or Ikebana. The distinctive customs and practices that Japanese flower arrangers practice have served as inspiration and motivation for the production of a wide variety of ceramic vessels designed specifically to present floral arrangements. Walking through several aesthetically distinct installations, we will explore the range of techniques and effects that contemporary potters have engaged as they mine the depths of Japanese ceramic-making traditions and push the boundaries of contemporary clay design.  Through the harmonious arrangement of contemporary ceramics and traditional Japanese paintings drawn from the Walters' permanent collection, this exhibition suggests several distinctive categories, or clusters, of ceramic production.  We will examine the aesthetic goals of each of the ceramists and consider the impacts that each strategy of design has had both in relation to Japanese tradition and to the concerns of the contemporary world.

Meet in Centre Street Lobby at 5:45 p.m.
