During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, fine bookbinding enjoyed an extraordinary period of creativity and artistic expression. Custom-made by hand, these bindings reflect an age of opulence and lavish decoration; gold tooling, colored leathers, and exotic materials combine to create readable, portable decorative masterpieces. Join exhibition curator Diane Bockrath for a tour of the focus show Bookbindings from the Gilded Age and an exploration of these fascinating objects.
