Scout Museum Days: A Medieval Life

Hear Ye! Hear Ye! All ye kings and queens, lords and ladies come hither! Join our guild of craftsmen and apprentices, joust with knights upon horses, and feast with royalty in the comfort of our castle. The Walters Art Museum invites you to spend a medieval afternoon exploring the art of the Middle Ages. Imagine the role of a knight suited in chainmail and armor, the job of a scribe creating a manuscript, and the skill of a troubadour performing for the nobility. Guided by museum educators, your scouts’ voyage throughout 14th- and 15th-century Europe will showcase the culture and craft of the medieval times. From stained glass to sculpture, the art and artifacts of Germany and France will continue to inspire creative thinking from the galleries to the studio.

Discover the wonderful world of art while earning Merit Badges! Daisy Girl Scouts will work toward their Tula Petal, Brownie Girl Scouts will works toward their Painting badge, Junior Girl Scouts will work toward their Drawing badge, and Cub Scouts will work toward their Art Academics Pin or Belt Loop during this interactive, two-hour exploration!

Pre-registration is required. When enrolling online, please include participating child's name and age. Please note that refunds will not be given if you are unable to attend the program for which you have registered.

Collateral Damage: The Fate of Cultural Property during Armed Conflict

The 2003 looting of the Iraq National Museum shocked the world. But despite new efforts to save world treasures, the loss of cultural property during armed conflicts is on the rise. Corine Wegener, Smithsonian Cultural Heritage Preservation Officer, will talk about her work as a U.S. Army “Monuments Man” in Iraq. Terry Drayman-Weisser, the Walters’ Director of Conservation and Technical Research, will describe damage to Iraq’s ancient Nimrud ivories and continuing efforts to preserve Iraq’s cultural heritage. The Art of Ancient Hairdressing
