Chado, The Way of Tea

Date
Saturday, May 11, 2013
Time
02:00 PM–03:00 PM
Chado, The Way of Tea

Please join us as we welcome the Chado Urasenke Tankokai Washington D.C. Association to demonstrate and explain the honored rituals and customs of an official tea ceremony.  Chado (literally “the Way of Tea”) synthesizes numerous arts and philosophies that combine into a systematic method of preparing, serving and drinking tea. Served with a respectful heart and received with gratitude, a bowl of tea satisfies both the physical and spiritual thirst. The timeless principles that each student follows in their pursuit of Chado represent an unbroken tradition that brings together social etiquette, Asian artistic traditions and philosophies, awareness of seasonal changes and the essence of Zen Buddhism. Incorporating these traditions into daily life helps one to find that unassailable place of tranquility that is within each of us. The audience will observe and learn all the details of the preparation and the serving of tea, as well as guest’s appropriate conversation methods and the final completion rituals.

About the Presenters:
The Chado Urasenke Tankokai Washington D.C. Association promotes the understanding of Urasenke Chado and cultural exchange between Japan and the United States. The Association offers tea lessons at Washin-an, Urasenke's tea room in downtown D.C., tea gatherings and tea-related events to explore the multifaceted world of Chado.
