Celebrate the Chinese New Year by lighting up the night sky with us this February! Make lucky art inspired by the museum’s colorful Asian art collection and traditions of this lunar holiday. Slither your way into the Year of the Snake as we create snake sculptures, bright lanterns, sparkling skies filled with firecrackers, and banners to hang in your home. Every Saturday and Sunday! No registration required–drop-in, make and take a fantastic piece of art home with you!

Travel the Chinese Zodiac in search of feathered, scaly and furry animals! Become sneaky detectives, using your eyes to look far and wide to spot all of our animal friends. Explore the museum's Asian art collection to learn about the traditions of the Chinese New Year from each rat, dog and rooster we meet. We’ll end our tour in the studios, creating Sneaky Slithering Snakes in honor of the Year of the Snake.

Please join us for a morning of delightful music as the Walters welcomes Peabody Preparatory Strings. A potpourri of Preparatory String Ensembles performs both treasured and new works, including Fiocco's Allegro, Bachman's Seville, and a contemporary work, "The Cold", by John Yankee. Performing will be the Peabody Violin Choir, Kreisler Violin Group and the Preparatory String Ensemble under the direction of Christian Tremblay, Andrea Picard Boecker and Matthew Horwitz-Lee, respectively.

American Artists Abroad

Tourists, students, expatriates, cosmopolitans, and explorers, American artists traveled widely during the nineteenth century. This exhibition explores this theme and features work by Mary Cassatt, John Singer Sargent, and James McNeill Whistler, among others. It celebrates the completion of a grant-funded project, sponsored by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services, to catalogue and photograph more than 600 American paintings, drawings, and miniatures.

Walk-In Tour: Designed for Flowers: Contemporary Japanese Ceramics

Take the opportunity to tour our spring exhibition with its curator, for only the price of an exhibition ticket (free for members)! A private collection of contemporary Japanese ceramics serves as the introduction to the traditional way of flower arranging, called “ikebana.” Works of art in different media from the permanent collection will add social and aesthetic context to the ceramics. Meet Dr. Robert Mintz in the Centre Street lobby for this installment of our Sunday walk-in tours.
