Drop-in Art Activities: Contemporary Kids

Marvel at Minimalism, get excited over Expressionism and delve into Dada! In celebration of hosting the special Janet and Walter Sondheim Artscape Prize exhibition this July, we will look toward the art stars of the 20th century for our inspiration. Add color, subtract graphite and stack paint to create your own gallery-worthy work!

1st-2nd Grade Summer Art Camp: Lotus Petals & Bamboo Shoots (Full Day)

Take a deep breath in the midst of our amazing Asian art collection this week. We will create calm and beautiful pieces of art inspired by nature. Together, we will move our bodies like bamboo in the breeze and dragons in the air. Learn about a variety of Asian traditions through stories and spark your imagination during a special camp tea ceremony. End the week by practicing yoga surrounded by original art created by our campers!

Create artwork inspired by natural elements found in our Asian art collection. Squish mud, splash water and touch the sky as we create original work of art in the studio. Discover the plants, animals, environments and legends depicted in Asian art – just watch out for the fire-breathing dragon!Campers will use sumi-e ink, clay and other art materials to depict the many fables and traditions that Asian art has to tell. We will end the week with a nature filled exhibition!

Collateral Damage: The Fate of Cultural Property during Armed Conflict

The 2003 looting of the Iraq National Museum shocked the world. But despite new efforts to save world treasures, the loss of cultural property during armed conflicts is on the rise. Corine Wegener, Smithsonian Cultural Heritage Preservation Officer, will talk about her work as a U.S. Army “Monuments Man” in Iraq. Terry Drayman-Weisser, the Walters’ Director of Conservation and Technical Research, will describe damage to Iraq’s ancient Nimrud ivories and continuing efforts to preserve Iraq’s cultural heritage. Sponsored by the Boshell Foundation.

Gallery Drawing Family Workshop: Language of Shape

NEW! Join us for a brand-new family drawing workshop! Young artists are invited to strengthen their observational drawing skills and build their portfolios while exploring works of art in the Walters’ collection. Explore the principles and basic language of shape as we learn to simplify visual complexity. Recommended for ages 9–13 and their favorite adults.

The Art of Ancient Hairdressing
