Presented by the Walters and the Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts, this exhibition will show the work of the finalists for the 2014 Janet & Walter Sondheim Artscape Prize. Artists will compete for top honors and a $25,000 fellowship in the Greater Baltimore area’s most prestigious arts competition.

Seeing Music in Medieval Manuscripts

Composed of approximately twenty manuscripts and objects, Seeing Music explores music in its relationship with philosophy, religion, and the arts during the Middle Ages, when musical harmony and dissonance were thought to mirror the perfection of heaven as well as the disorder of evil.

Jessye Norman: In Conversation with Tom Hall

Come hear Jessye Norman, one of America's most accomplished and beloved opera singers, discuss her new book Stand Up Straight and Sing! This Grammy Award-winning international opera star will offer perspectives on her life—from growing up in the South to performing on the world’s greatest stages in conversation with Tom Hall, music director of the Baltimore Choral Arts Society. Tickets $25 (includes one book).

Learning by Watching: Andean Textiles and the Fabric of Culture

Andean textile specialist Dr. Anne Tiballi, the Andrew W. Mellon Curricular Facilitator at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, will present “Learning by Watching: Andean Textiles and the Fabric of Culture.” During this engaging talk, Dr. Tiballi will explore the production of ancient American textiles, examine their significance, and discuss their impact on the broader material culture of the ancient Americas.

Folger Consort Performs A Renaissance Christmas: Music of Flanders and Italy circa 1500

The Folger Consort, the early music ensemble-in-residence at the Folger Shakespeare Library since 1977, will present A Renaissance Christmas: Music of Flanders and Italy circa 1500, a 90-minute concert featuring vocalists, winds, and strings. This premiere performance is inspired by the Walters’ Madonna and Child with Angels, currently on view in our Italian Galleries. You won’t want to miss this special holiday program performed on the beautiful Sculpture Court.
