Seeing Music in Medieval Manuscripts

Composed of approximately twenty manuscripts and objects, Seeing Music explores music in its relationship with philosophy, religion, and the arts during the Middle Ages, when musical harmony and dissonance were thought to mirror the perfection of heaven as well as the disorder of evil.

Before Care: Puppets Sculpture, Stage & Screen, Drawing People, Places and Things

6th-8th Grade: The Artist's Studio Experience: Puppets: Sculpture, Stage & Screen

Spend a week creating a world with puppets! From finger puppets to shadow puppets, explore different types of puppetry and experiment with soft sculpture and mixed media. Participants will learn about character development and set design, while learning mechanics, lighting, and production methods such as stop-motion animation and videography.

9th-12th Grade The Artists Studio Experience: Drawing: People, Places & Things

Date: Monday, August 4, 2014–Friday, August 8, 2014

Participants will create observational drawings based on individually selected themes and objects in the museum.  Students will create sketchbooks to use in the galleries and studios, experiment with a variety of drawing materials and styles, and complete several large-scale drawings for their portfolios. The group will discuss historical and contemporary art, examine professional artists’ portfolios, explore a variety of drawing techniques, and exercise individual and group critiques.

Collecting Histories and Collecting Mysteries: Great Art Collectors of America's Gilded Age

Inge Reist will bring alive the personalities of Gilded Age collectors as they formed some of America’s most dazzling and admired collections. Her talk will also explore their motivations and methods of acquisition, as well as their philanthropic legacies. Reist is Director of the Center for the History of Collecting at the Frick Collection and Frick Art Reference Library.

Gallery Drawing Family Workshop: Gesture Drawing
