WHAT: From Flapping Birds to Space Telescopes: The Modern Science of Origami
Robert J. Lang, Scientist and Artist, formerly of the California Institute of Technology, the NASA ⁄Jet Propulsion 2 Laboratory, Spectra Diode Laboratories and JDS Uniphase
Recognized as one of the world’s foremost origami artists, Lang has pioneered a new kind of origami using math and engineering principles that result in mind-blowingly beautiful, practical, and intricately folded designs. Scientists are examining and applying origami patterns toward a technique of compacting an immense 100-meter space telescope into a tight, orderly package.
This program was made possible via a partnership with the Johns Hopkins University Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore.
