Theotokos Across Time: Madonna and Child Revisited
Theotokos Across Time: Madonna and Child Revisited
What:
The earliest “Madonna and Child” images exist in Roman catacombs. Throughout the Byzantine, Medieval and Early Renaissance periods, images of Mary (Theotokos) were the single most-produced pictorial artworks. The speaker will be Lee Sandstead, host of the Travel Channel’s “Art Attack with Lee Sandstead.” In this lecture, Sandstead unravels this theme, highlighting works from the Walters collection, as well as identifying other artists who have depicted this enduring subject.
