Discussion on the Invention of Pottery at the Walters, 1/24
What: The Invention of Pottery
Pottery is the world’s first transformative technology. It doesn’t exist in nature. Unfired clay isn’t pottery, and an unfired clay jar isn’t pottery. Only when it is transformed by fire does it become pottery. Inventing the first artificial material in the world was neither an obvious nor simple process. This lecture will trace the development of pottery in the ancient Near East.
