Learn about Archaistic Art at the Walters, 2/14
What: Perpetuating the Past: Archaistic Art of the Walters Art Museum
In the Hellenistic and Roman periods, sculptors looked to images and styles from earlier times to create their works of art. One trend, referred to as the “Archaistic” style, modeled itself on the Archaic period of Greek art of the sixth and early fifth centuries BCE.
In this program, we will look at what constitutes the Archaistic style, its origins, its themes and even its misconceptions to understand how Hellenistic and Roman artists used the imagery of the past to acknowledge and reinterpret their present.
