Gee's Bend: The Architecture of the Quilt

June 15–Aug. 26, 2007

The Walters Art Museum
600 North Charles Street
Baltimore, MD 21201

The exhibition features 45 stunningly original quilts created from the 1920s through 2005 by the women of Gee’s Bend, Alabama. The exhibition includes four generations of African-American artists from this small, isolated, farming community whose quilts have been equated with bold, modernist, abstract paintings. The show will explore how the influences of architecture and the environment form the foundation of Gee’s Bend quiltmaking. Like many American quilters, the women of Gee’s Bend transformed the need to provide warmth and comfort for their families into innovative artworks. Combining well-known patterns with their own improvisational flair, the quilters of Gee’s Bend have created several contemporary designs unique to their community.

Wednesday–Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Friday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Gee’s Bend: The Architecture of the Quilt has been organized by the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and Tinwood Alliance, Atlanta. Transportation for the exhibition is provided by EGL Eagle Global Logistics.

The Walters venue is presented by The Women’s Committee of the Walters Art Museum with additional support provided by Wendyce H. Brody, Vernon A. Reid, and James H. DeGraffenreidt, Jr. and Mychelle Y. Farmer, M.D.
