Baltimore—The Walters Art Museum is pleased to present programming related to the special exhibition Exploring Art of the Ancient Americas on view Feb. 12–May 20, 2012.
Opening Day Talk: Exploring Art of the Ancient Americas
Sunday, February 12, 2–3 p.m.
Curator Dorie Reents-Budet will provide an overview of the exhibition Exploring Art of the Ancient Americas: The John Bourne Collection Gift. She will examine key objects with origins ranging from ancient Mexico to Bolivia and discuss John Bourne’s early years exploring the jungles of southern Mexico in search of ancient Maya archaeological sites.
Lunch & Learn: The John Bourne Collection: From Private to Public Domain
Thursday, March 1, 12:15–1:15 p.m.
Explore the journey of the John Bourne collection of 300 ancient Americas artifacts from a private collection to the Walters, a public art museum. Using a multi-faceted approach, Senior Objects Conservator Julie Lauffenburger will address how the museum tackled issues of authenticity, over-restoration and materials identification now that the objects are housed in a public collection.
Ancient Americas Forum
Saturday, March 17, 12–4:30 p.m.
This forum discussion will explore topics tied to the special exhibition Exploring Art of the Ancient Americas presented by a panel of experts from several disciplines. Panelists include Senior Objects Conservator Julie Lauffenburger, Anthropologist Allen Christenson and Archaeastronomist Anthony Aveni, best-known for his theories on the prophesized end of the world in December of 2012.

The Women’s Committee of the Walters Art Museum presents the annual Art Blooms event. Each spring, Art Blooms enhances the Walters’ collection with interpretative floral arrangements by regional garden clubs. Activities include a floral design speaker/demonstration, docent tours and the spectacular combination of flowers and art.
AfterHours at the Walters

Celebrate the opening of our new special exhibition Exploring Art of the Ancient Americas: The John Bourne Collection Gift with an AfterHours event. Enjoy music, food, cash bar and a discussion about “authentic” Mexican food with Walters Director Gary Vikan and food scholar Jeffrey Pilcher. Entry to the exhibition is free.

Tour free with membership or exhibition admission.
The docent tour in the museum’s permanent collection is free.
Students will analyze stone, clay and fiber artworks created by the diverse cultures from Northern Mexico to Chile featured in the special exhibition Exploring Art of the Ancient Americas. In the Walters’ studios, students will create their own work of art inspired by the art of Mesoamerica. There will be separate workshops for age 5–6, 7–9 and 10–12.
