Join The Walters for Fall Educational Events, Gallery Talks, and Walking Tours

The Walters Art Museum will host a series of free educational events, gallery talks and walking tours for the entire family, beginning in September.


Drop-in Art Activities: Books! Libros! Livre!

September 1–September 30, 2013, 10 a.m. –3 p.m.

Open up a story, discover the many languages and cultures throughout the museum and celebrate National Literacy Month and the start of Hispanic Heritage Month. No registration is required.

Walk-In Tour: Highlights of the Walters

September 1, 1–2 p.m.

 “Highlights of the Walters” explores painting, sculpture, and the decorative arts from antiquity to the 19th century. No reservations are required.

ArtKids Preschool Program: My Colors, My World/Mis Colores, Mi Mundo

Gallery Talk: Site Unseen

September 5, 6–7 p.m.

Join artist Gregory Vershbow for a gallery talk in his exhibition, Site Unseen. He navigates spaces such as storage facilities, conservation laboratories and monuments under restoration, to capture large, color photographs of art objects wrapped in plastic or foam, nested in boxes and tucked away in dark corners. Vershbow will discuss his experience of these spaces and the technical aspects of creating the photographs.

Participate in a free tour of one of the most unique galleries in the museum. The Chamber of Art and Wonders replicates an actual 17th century collection of artworks and natural wonders from around the world.

Members Tour: The Colors of Autumn in East Asia

Learn about the Walters collection of Asian art to explore the colors of autumn in Japan, on a tour led by Robert Mintz, chief curator and curator of Asian art.

Jacob Lawrence's Genesis Series

September 14–December 8, 10 a.m. –5 p.m.

Painter Jacob Lawrence is known for using a series format to render in colorful expressive imagery and text the narrative stories of historical African-American figures like Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman. Each of the eight works on view in Jacob Lawrence’s Genesis Series (1990) describes a passage from the book of Genesis in the King James version of the Bible.

Strengthen your art-reading skills and travel back to the Ancient Near East to explore one of the earliest known systems of writing, cuneiform. Tour is for ages 6-8 and adults.

Examine the contrasts between Asian and Western art and the impact that each culture had on the artwork of the other. The tour will visit the Asian Art collection in Hackerman House, with objects to be chosen by the docent.
