WHAT: FREE Walters Wide Open Weekend
Schedule of Events
The Walters kicks off its celebration of free admission and new hours with “Walters Wide Open Weekend.” A Friday nighttime event will feature The Campbell Brothers presenting Sacred Steel: African-American gospel music with electric steel guitar, performances by the Off the Cuff improv group and the acoustic cover band The Late Night Breakfast. There will also be local celebrity tours, including D’Marge, (“Tina Turner”) celebrity icon of the Baltimore drag community, with friends, an Elvis impersonator and a movie night, including the cult classic, “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.” There will be wine from Boordy Vineyards, beer and light refreshments available.
On Saturday, events will include puppeteers, storytellers, musicians and a woman on stilts. Other highlights include a performance by the Baltimore Choral Arts Society, family tours of the museum collections, Drop-in Art activities, ArtCarts and an Early Childhood Art Fair. On Sunday, the public can visit the museum, listen to a lecture on the influence of classical Greek dress on later fashion by Valerie Steele and watch the Columbus Day Parade. On both Saturday and Sunday, visitors can meet Waltee, the museum’s mascot, see “Art Cars” and enjoy free mini cupcakes provided by Charm City Cupcakes (in limited quantities).
Exhibitions on display include a collection of German manuscripts from the 9th through 16th centuries, and Courbet and the Modern Landscape opening on Oct. 15.
