Gee’s Bend: The Architecture of the Quilt June 15–August 26, 2007 Organized by the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, this exhibition features approximately 40 brilliant and dynamic quilts that are as much reminiscent of abstract paintings as of traditional American quilts. Created by a group of 38 women, these quilts span four generations of the isolated, all-black community of Gee’s Bend, Alabama. This show will explore the impact of architecture and environmental and traditional quilting motifs as well as examine the basic structural patterns that appear to form the foundation of Gee’s Bend quilt making. Like many American quilters, they transformed a necessity—providing staples for their family—into works of art that are bold and innovative in their design. Gee’s Bend: The Architecture of the Quilt will demonstrate that the brilliant tradition of quilt making in Gee’s Bend runs deeply and extends through generations. |
