Manuscript Gallery Focus Show
Ottoman Embroideries & Other Ornament
May 5–September 9, 2007
The Walters has a fine but little-known collection of 18th- and 19th-century embroidered textiles from Greece, Asia Minor, Armenia, Algeria and other regions of the former Ottoman Empire. A selection of these works will be shown together with pieces in other media, displaying many of the typical ornamental motifs of Ottoman decorative art. The Ottoman Empire was home to several large ethnic and religious communities. They shared a sophisticated “language” of ornament, which each of the communities modified and adapted to its needs and values. The exhibition will present a small study of artistic interaction, illustrated with high-quality works most of which have not been exhibited in the past three decades.
