The Repeating Image in Renaissance and Baroque Art

September 8, 2007–February 17, 2008

In the fourth-floor drawing gallery, The Repeating Image in Renaissance and Baroque Art will complement the Déjà Vu? exhibition by looking at the theme of artistic copying from a Renaissance and Baroque perspective. Focusing on approximately a dozen works of art, including paintings, sculptures and decorative art objects, it will present a survey of the main forms of artistic copying that were practiced in Europe between the late 1300s and the early 1700s. The overarching aim will be to show that throughout these periods artists had a range of motivations for copying earlier works and rarely thought of copies as forgeries.
