Jewelry—Ancient to Modern

This lecture explores 5,000 years of jewelry-making—from ancient Mesopotamian pendants to late 19th- and early 20th-century masterpieces by Tiffany & Co. and René Lalique—drawn from the Walters collection. Jewelry is both a conservative medium, as demonstrated by works imitating older styles, as well as an art that constantly tests the limits of technological achievement. This lecture traces the continuities among cultures divided by vast distances or many centuries.

The Walters’ Women’s Committee was formed in 1963 to support the museum and its mission. Since 1990, the committee has raised over $1 million through events like Art Blooms and the Jewelry Fair for exhibitions, special projects and the Education Endowment for the Walters Art Museum. Proceeds from Art Blooms 2007 made it possible for the Walters to bring the exhibition Gee’s Bend: The Architecture of the Quilt to Baltimore in June 2007.

The Walters Art Museum is located in Baltimore’s historic Mount Vernon Cultural District at North Charles and Centre streets. Its permanent collection includes ancient art, medieval art and manuscripts, decorative objects, Asian art and Old Master and 19th-century paintings. Peabody Court is the official hotel of the Walters Art Museum.  For hotel reservations, call 1-800-292-5500.
