WALTERS ART MUSEUM OFFERS A VARIETY OF ADULT AND FAMILY
PROGRAMMING IN CONJUNCTION WITH MIGHTIER THAN THE SWORD: THE SATIRICAL PEN OF KAL

Baltimore—This summer, the Walters Art Museum will present exciting activities in conjunction
with Mightier Than The Sword: The Satirical Pen of KAL, which presents a survey of over 200 of the artist’s works including caricatures, sculptures and animation.

INTERACTIVE GALLERY PROGRAM
Wednesdays, June 21, July 12 and August 9, 2–4:30 p.m.
KAL will create his weekly cartoon for The Economist in the exhibition’s interactive gallery.
Visitors will have an opportunity to ask KAL questions, and he will submit his finished work to
The Economist in London directly from the Walters.
 
LECTURE
An Afternoon with KAL

PANEL DISCUSSION
Cartooning: A Global Perspective
Sunday, July 9, 2 p.m.
Location: Graham auditorium
Price: Free with museum admission
KAL will moderate a panel with Iranian-born cartoonist Nikahang Kowsar, Cuban-born
cartoonist Gustavo Rodriguez and Robert Russell, executive director of Cartoonists Rights
Network International, on the challenges political cartoonists face. The panel will take place
shortly after July 4, in celebration of Independence Day.

Making Faces: Beginning Caricature with KAL
Saturday, July 29, 1-4 p.m.
Express Yourself! An Introduction to Cartooning with KAL
Saturday, August 5, 1-4 p.m.
Price per workshop: member, seniors, students $50; non-members $65
Location: Studio B
KAL will conduct two workshops with different topics over two Saturdays. In the first
workshop, participants will learn the basics of drawing caricatures. In the second, KAL will
instruct participants in the work of the editorial cartoonist; participants will explore expressing

August: SHAZAM! Comics and Cartoons
Make superheroes, storyboards, caricature collages, painted caption pictures and more this
month as we focus on making our way through the special exhibition of illustrations by political
cartoonist KAL.

TOUR
Walk & Wonder Tour: Caricatures, Comics and Cartoons
Saturday, August 19, 1 p.m.
Please meet in the Centre Street Lobby
This 45-minute experience allows visitors of all ages to enjoy an interactive, guided, discovery
tour of our collections, or special exhibitions, with a trained museum educator. Extend your
experience by visiting the Family Art Center after the tour to create a work of art that relates to
the objects seen in the galleries.

PRESCHOOL PROGRAMS

How to Draw Blitz Cartoons
Learn about the fantastic, fun and truly wacky world of cartooning. Follow Bruce Blitz as he
teaches you the basics of drawing cartoons step by step. Bring your sketchbooks to this
interactive film and discover the artist in yourself.
