Passion Scenes Description: The form of this ivory, four panels assembled like a folding screen, is extremely rare. The panels are carved with Passion scenes that follow Parisian tradition, yet this ivory is attributed to a German workshop based on its style and some of the details, such as the pierced rosettes above the gables. At the Crucifixion, the Virgin is pierced by a sword emerging from the side of Christ, a feature of German mysticism referring to her great sorrow (Luke 2:34-35). Artist: Anonymous (German) Period: Medieval Country: Italy (?) Style: Gothic Provenance: Arnold Seligmann, Rey and Co., New York; Henry Walters, Baltimore, 1923 [mode of acquisition unknown]; Walters Art Museum, 1931, by bequest. Credit Line: Acquired by Henry Walters, 1923 |
