Renaissance & Baroque Art

This collection of European Renaissance and Baroque art features significant holdings not only of paintings but also sculpture, furniture, ceramics, metal work (gold and silver), as well as jewelry, arms and armor, and even locks and keys, offering a comprehensive display of the arts during this artistically fertile period. The best-known works include Hugo van der Goes' Donor with Saint John the Baptist, Heemskerck’s Panorama with the Abduction of Helen Amidst the Wonders of the Ancient World, Veronese’s Portrait Of Countess Livia da Porto Thiene and her Daughter Porzia, El Greco's Saint Francis Receiving the Stigmata, Bernini's Risen Christ, Tiepolo’s Scipio Africanus Freeing Massiva, and The Ideal City attributed to Fra Carnavale.

Beyond the specific holdings – especially in Italian painting, one of the more significant in the Americas – this collection owes its renown to installations that re-create the domestic settings in which such art was initially displayed. These feature a knight’s hall in France around 1500, the galleries of Italian Renaissance and Baroque palaces, intimate spaces of a wealthy Dutch merchant’s home around 1700, and three rooms of a Flemish nobleman’s residence in the 1600s – a hall of arms and armor, a private study with Renaissance bronzes, jewels, and intriguing antiquities, leading to a chamber of wonders. This room, with its hundreds of natural history wonders displayed with marvels of human ingenuity from all corners of the world, offers an unparalleled opportunity to experience the excitement of the Age of Exploration in Europe. As an authentic re-creation of a chamber of wonders, this installation is unique in the Americas.
