Lynley Anne Herbert

Robert and Nancy Hall Assistant Curator of Rare Books and Manuscripts

Lynley Anne Herbert was appointed Robert and Nancy Hall Assistant Curator of Rare Books and Manuscripts in 2013, and has previously worked in the department as a Carol Bates Fellow and as a Curatorial Associate (2010-2013). Prior to earning her Ph.D. in 2012, she worked in Development at the Walters (2001-2004), as well as at the Phillips Collection in Washington D.C. (1998-2001). Lynley holds a B.A. in Art History and Archaeology/Art Studio from the University of Maryland, College Park, and received her M.A. and Ph.D. in Medieval Art History from the University of Delaware. She specializes in Western medieval manuscripts, and her personal research interests focus on the interplay between text, image, theological thought, and the viewer within Carolingian manuscripts. Her most current article,  "Le toucher de l’Evêque," stems from a keynote address she recently gave in Poitiers, France, and serves as a precursor to her monograph LUX VITA: The Majesty and Humanity of Christ in the Gospels of Sainte-Croix of Poitiers , now in progress.

Lynley has curated two manuscript exhibitions at the Walters: Checkmate! Medieval People at Play (2010), and Living by the Book: Monks, Nuns, and their Manuscripts (2013). She is currently developing two future exhibitions that will open in the fall of 2014, one in conjunction with Associate Curator of 18th- and 19th-Century Art Jo Briggs that will explore Henry Walters? book collecting habits as part of the Rye to Raphael installation, and another that will examine the intersection between manuscripts and the earliest printed books, From Pen to Press: Experimentation and Innovation in the Age of Print . In her future curatorial endeavors, it is her goal to make the Walters? manuscripts, as well as its rich collection of rare printed books, more visible in the galleries.

Over the past five years the Walters has received three manuscript digitization grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Lynley has overseen the completion of the second grant and is currently managing the third, Imaging the Hours: Creating a Digital Resource of Flemish Manuscripts , for which she is the main cataloger. Although heavily involved in the digitization of the books, she is a strong proponent of the value of studying the original object, and regularly teaches classes with the manuscripts and rare books within the rare book library.
