Over the last several months, Baltimore-based artist Krystal Mack of Studio IAO and PalatePALETTE Zine has undertaken a research project into some of the narratives and histories of 1 West Mt. Vernon Place. Her efforts will culminate in a temporary installation and series of free programs highlighting Sybby Grant, an enslaved cook for the home’s initial residents.
Much of the artist’s research project has focused on foodways: the cultural, social, and economic practices relating to the production and consumption of food. For this talk, Mack will be joined by historians to discuss the past, present, and future of black women’s roles in food preparation in the United States.
