Member Tour: African Ancestry in European Art

Examine the painting of Giulia de Medici by Jacopo Pontormo, which includes the first portrait of a child of African ancestry in European Art with Joaneath Spicer, James A. Murnaghan Curator of Renaissance and Baroque Art. This portrait is one of the critical documents for the study of the roles of peoples of African ancestry in Renaissance Europe.

Led by Abigail Quandt, Head of Book and Paper Conservation; Cathie Magee, Mellon Fellow in Book Conservation; and Lynley Herbert, Robert and Nancy Hall Assistant Curator of Rare Books and Manuscripts, this tour will highlight the decorative aspects of binding materials.
