Lunch & Learn: Archimedes Conservator Abigail Quandt

Thursday, October 6, 2011

12:15 PM–01:15 PM

Enjoy the season’s first Lunch & Learn talk by the Walters Senior Conservator of Manuscripts and Rare Books, Abigail Quandt, who began treatment of The Archimedes Palimpsest in 2000. Referring to detailed notes of the process, Quandt shares an account of her work on the Palimpsest, which includes innovative steps to stabilize the leaves for digital imaging, final repair work and mounting in custom frames.

At Lunch & Learn events, bring your light lunch to the Walters' Graham Auditorium (or purchase a lunch in the Walters’ café) to enjoy lectures by curators, conservators, scholars and artists covering a range of topics related to the Walters' exhibitions, collections and areas of interest.

Lunch & Learn talks are free to the public and occur every first Thursday of the month until June.

About the Speaker

Abigail Quand is the Senior Conservator of Manuscripts and Rare Books at the Walters Art Museum. Since 1999, Quandt has been the lead conservator for The Archimedes Palimpsest Project, whose focus is to conserve, image and transcribe the earliest surviving copy of Archimedes’ treatises, which dates to the 10th century. Quandt has acted both as consultant and team leader for significant manuscript treatment projects outside the Walters, and has gained an international reputation as an expert in the conservation of medieval manuscripts on parchment.
