Eva Helfenstein, Andrew W. Mellon Curatorial Fellow in the Department of Renaissance and Baroque Art, will discuss exotic materials in the Chamber of Wonders.
Rare materials such as elephant ivory, rhinoceros horn or coconut shell have been used to create works of art. Some of these materials were believed to have magical properties, while others were collected as "curiosities" coming from all over the world. The focus of this tour will be on the different types of materials, where they came from, why they were chosen and how they influence the final form of the work of art.
