The last film by Japanese master Akira Kurosawa, Madadayo tells the story of a beloved and aging teacher who welcomes former students into his home every year on his birthday. Each year, when asked “are you ready?” the professor calls out “mada dayo!” or “not yet!” Based on the life of Japanese academic and author Hyakken Uchida, this film is a touching example of the Japanese tradition of “ningen kokuho,” or living national treasures. Japanese, subtitled in English. Running time: 134 min; NR.
