Many of the fascinating connections between the East and the West in the medieval era can be witnessed through Islamic objects that were modified to fit more comfortably into Christian contexts. Dr. Avinoam Shalem of Columbia University will discuss the radical reinterpretations of Islamic objects—such as ivory caskets and rock crystal vessels—that occurred once they were taken to the church treasuries of Western medieval societies.
