Members Tour: Faiyum Mummy Portraits

Wednesday, February 26, 2014
01:00 PM–02:00 PM
Members Tour: Faiyum Mummy Portraits

For members and their guests. No registration necessary.

We invite members to join Marden Nichols, Assistant Curator of Ancient Art, Geneva Griswold, Objects Conservation Intern, and Glenn Gates, Conservation Scientist, for an in-depth examination of and discussion of the Walters "Faiyum Mummy Portraits". This tour will highlight the ancient panel painting titled Mummy Portrait of a Bearded Man by addressing the function and cultural significance of such portraiture in the ancient world, and detailing the role of the Walters in the current international collaboration to study these mummy portraits. For this special event, a second ancient panel painting titled Mummy Portrait of a Woman will be temporarily relocated from storage and brought to the galleries, providing members with a rare opportunity to view and learn about this magnificent painting and its relationship to a similar portrait in the collection of the Louvre.

This tour is part of our series of Members Tours.
