Walk-In Tour: The Chamber of Art and Wonders

Join us for this free tour of one of the museum's most fascinating galleries. The Chamber of Art and Wonders replicates a 17th-century collection of artworks and natural wonders from around the world.

This room, with its hundreds of natural wonders displayed with marvels of human ingenuity from all corners of the world, offers an unparalleled opportunity to experience the excitement of the Age of Exploration in Europe. As an authentic recreation of a chamber of wonders, this installation is unique in the Americas.

Seeing Music in Medieval Manuscripts

Composed of approximately twenty manuscripts and objects, Seeing Music explores music in its relationship with philosophy, religion, and the arts during the Middle Ages, when musical harmony and dissonance were thought to mirror the perfection of heaven as well as the disorder of evil.

Collateral Damage: The Fate of Cultural Property during Armed Conflict

The 2003 looting of the Iraq National Museum shocked the world. But despite new efforts to save world treasures, the loss of cultural property during armed conflicts is on the rise. Corine Wegener, Smithsonian Cultural Heritage Preservation Officer, will talk about her work as a U.S. Army “Monuments Man” in Iraq. Terry Drayman-Weisser, the Walters’ Director of Conservation and Technical Research, will describe damage to Iraq’s ancient Nimrud ivories and continuing efforts to preserve Iraq’s cultural heritage. Sponsored by the Boshell Foundation.
