Free Walters Lecture on Thai Manuscript Show

Lunch & Learn: The Story of Vessantara

What: Lunch & Learn: The Story of Vessantara
Mellon Curatorial Fellow of Asian Art at the Walters Art Museum Rebecca Hall will talk about the manuscript focus show Thai Story: The Vessantara Jataka. The exhibition explores the Vessantara Jataka, a tale of one of the Buddha’s former lives as a Prince whose generosity sets an example for others to admire and follow.
Through Vessantara’s selfless acts, he reveals his transcendent understanding of the virtue of charity. Hall will present this narrative using imagery from Thailand, painted around the turn of the 20th century. These works were intended to be hung during festivals when the reading of this story was offered to the Buddhist community.
