The Return of the Buddha

This one-object installation focuses on the Walters’ renowned 6th-century lacquer Buddha, which returns to the Walters from an exhibition at the Freer|Sackler museum in Washington, D.C. This life-size sculpture has awed audiences with its magnificence and remarkable history—it is the earliest surviving object of its kind. The Walters’ conservation team reveals fascinating information about the Buddha’s construction and its origins, emphasizing the sophisticated materials and artistry involved in its creation.
